Kigali, Rwanda – On July 7, 2026, thousands of excited yet determined young learners across Rwanda sat for the 2025/2026 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), marking a significant milestone in their academic journey.
A total of 277,452 pupils, including 928 students with disabilities who received tailored examination arrangements, began the national exams at 1,182 centers nationwide. The exams, which run until July 9, cover five key subjects: Mathematics, Kinyarwanda, English, Science and Technology, and General Knowledge and Religious Education.
Claudette Irere, state minister in the ministry of education, officially launched the examinations at GS Karembure and delivered an encouraging message to the candidates.
“For the students, the most important thing is to show what they have learned. These assessments exist so we can check whether a child has mastered what they are expected to know at this level… We are not asking for anything else except that you demonstrate that you studied and studied well. Do the exams without fear.”
Irere also urged parents to maintain normal routines for their children, emphasizing the importance of rest and ensuring all necessary materials are provided. “The fact that they are sitting exams does not mean life stops. Let them continue with their usual activities, but rest is very important so they return to school in good condition.”
Urujeni Martine, vice mayor of Kigali in charge of economic development and social welfare, expressed strong optimism for improved results this year. She noted that thorough reviews and corrective measures were taken following last year’s performance.
“We analyzed deeply what caused the unsatisfactory results last year. We held discussions with school leaders, visited schools, and conducted inspections to identify weaknesses. The strategies we have put in place to better prepare the children will surely yield better outcomes.”
With calm encouragement from leaders and comprehensive preparations in place, Rwanda’s young learners are poised to showcase their knowledge and open new chapters in their education.
