A modern mothers’ waiting and maternity house was officially inaugurated at Rukomo health center in Rukomo sector, marking a significant improvement in maternal healthcare services for local residents. Community members have warmly welcomed the new facility, describing it as a long awaited solution to previous challenges.
Before its construction, mothers had to deliver in a very small and inadequate space. With a growing number of patients seeking services at the health center, the old facility had become congested and uncomfortable. The new building now offers a spacious, clean, and well equipped environment for safe deliveries.
During the inauguration, Murekatete Juliet, vice mayor in charge of Social affairs, highlighted the role of good governance in delivering such infrastructure. She reminded residents that development projects like this are made possible through the taxes they pay and urged them to continue fulfilling their tax obligations responsibly.
“The government is steadily expanding health infrastructure to ensure quality services and better health outcomes for all citizens,” Murekatete said. She encouraged residents to enroll in community based health insurance (mutuelle de santé), deliver at health facilities, and attend all scheduled antenatal care visits so that potential complications can be detected and managed early.
The new facility features comfortable waiting rooms and three delivery rooms that can accommodate multiple mothers in labor simultaneously. It also has a postnatal ward with a capacity of nine beds for mothers who have just given birth.
This development is part of broader national efforts to strengthen maternal and child health services across Rwanda, ensuring that mothers and newborns receive dignified, timely, and professional care closer to home.
