Gicumbi June 26, 2026, residents of Gicumbi district joined the rest of Africa in celebrating the day of the African child, using the occasion to deliver a strong message on responsible parenting and the protection of children’s rights.
Under the theme “Ndera neza nkure nemye” (Raise Well So I May Grow Well), local authorities warned parents against neglecting their duties, particularly those involving child abuse, exposure to drugs, and domestic conflicts that harm children.
The event, held in Irasaniro Village, Gaseke Cell, Mutete Sector, brought together schools, local leaders, and partners. It featured cultural performances, poems, and skits in which children themselves highlighted the responsibilities of parents.
Irankijije Nduwayo, Executive Secretary of Mutete Sector, praised the district’s high school enrollment rate of 99% but stressed the need for greater parental involvement: “Parents must understand the rights of every child. Even those who dropped out should be brought back to school,” he said.
District officials urged parents to provide proper nutrition, ensure regular school attendance, and discipline children with love rather than violence. They also called for vigilance against drug abuse and for immediate reporting of any child rights violations. Uwera Parfaite, Gicumbi district vice mayor in charge of economic development, emphasized the importance of values and protection.
“Teach children cleanliness, good behavior, and moral values. Protect them from drugs. If you see any child whose rights are being violated, report it immediately,” she said.
Speakers also highlighted the rights of children with disabilities, reminding the community that every child deserves equal opportunity to live, learn, and grow in safety. This year’s celebration marked the 35th anniversary of the day of the African Child, reaffirming the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.
The message was clear: well-raised children become responsible future leaders. In Gicumbi, leaders and parents alike renewed their commitment to building a brighter future one child at a time.
